3D Mindset & Learning

  • Does multi-tasking give you a real or false sense of having accomplished something?

It depends. Most students would say that they concentrate better with music. When I was in secondary school, a guest came to school to discuss the techniques students use to improve their learning skills. He (the guest) explained that listening to classical music or instrumental music, has been effective in the learning and concentration process. However student who listen to music which included singing is ultimately a distraction, despite the student trying their very best to concentrate.

For me, I tend to be able to concentrate better at night while listening to music when I study.. That is, if I had enough sleep in the afternoon to overcome sleepiness. I do admit that I feel accomplished multitasking however, this is a form of denial for most student. We are not unleashing the best we can perform academically and there is no one to blame but ones level of discipline and priorities.

  • Is learning 3D and design different from learning programming, or is all learning the same? Why?

It is not the same. Both subjects require different skills in terms of being 'hands-on', I'll classify IN3D under that while programming under 'academic/high memory skills'. As for me I have to concentrate, remember and apply to learn and therefore I think that most subjects has its similarities and differences.

It varies because we have to take into consideration of the student's weaknesses and advantages. Different students have different interests.

· The article states that “Learning is actually a very complex operation for an individual”. Do you agree with this? Do you feel that you approach your learning in the best way – if yes, how, and if no, how can you change your work style?

Yes, I do agree that it is complex. There is a saying that 'if you don't try, you will never know'. Without trying how could I know weather I am good at a subject? I try to create a timetable for myself but it never comes through. In the end, I end up procrastinating. My work style will still remain the same because I do not know how else to make it better other than not listening to music or having distractions. I suppose that I have to sacrifice time and practice to improve my working style.

· What are your thoughts about the last paragraph in the extract?

It is absolutely true. People are attracted in doing easy things because it is easily accomplished.

· Should your lecturers also focus on your work attitude, or just leave you to sink or swim on your own? Why?

Just like students, lecturers have their own style of teaching and whether they actually have interest in the upbringing and helping in improving their students grades are up to them. A teacher once told me, "You can't save all of them". He is right. It is up to the student as well. I suppose many lecturers have tried their very best in helping their student. However patience can be hard.

In Poly, students are trained to work on their own. To learn how to be independent, this will eventually be applied to their careers. But it's nice to know that a lecturer cares once in a while. In the end, humans are designed to work better with a little bit of affection.
